Today
the space to the north of the Mandai is an open space as the
site plan shows. But far from being an open space it is a
heavily dense space. The density is made by vendors and shops
selling all kinds of things. These shops are temporary in
their structure and yet permanent in their nature. The Mandai
over time couldn’t support the growing needs of the
sellers and the buyers and hence the incremental shifts began
happening, which today have reached a phenomenal size. The
entire area has now become a classic example of urban infill.
In 1985 a new market was built behind, to the south of the
mandai. There are still more vendors outside both these markets
than there are inside. The first and foremost aim of this
design is to accomodate these sellers, giving them proper
places . By doing this one is ensuring that the mandai (market)
area remains a throbing centre of the city of Pune. |
