The
Project :
In 1990 a new Mandai was set up behind the old colonial building
to accomodate the increase in the number of vegetable sellers.
Today this is also not sufficient, causing a drastic spill
over of things from both the old and the new market. The project
aims at remaking the new market, and while doing so accomodating
all the vegetable sellers. By doing so one also creats a substantial
open space to the north side of the old building. The creation
of this plaza is essential since it will serve for the many
cultural, religious, and political activities that take place
periodically in this area. This city holds a tradition in
theatre, indian classical music, and other performing arts.
The centre of the city will recieve a larger audience than
before once the open space is created.
There is no one building, but agglomeration of many small
units. This gives the possibility of further growth to the
entire market. The choice of materials would play a vital
role in making this market. It was decided to use stone (
locally available ) , for making the ground, and the plinth.
The rest of the body of each building was formed with steel
and the roof would be formed with tiles. The market is designed
to store rainwater, running from the roofs. This same water
would be used for cleaning the maket on a daily basis.
Note : Traffic problems in and around the area are
a result of lack of parking spaces. A proposal was also made
to make parking spaces available in empty pockets in an around
the area. |
