AHMEDABAD HERITAGE CENTRE : A COLLABORATIVE BETWEEN THE EMBASSY OF FRANCE IN INDIA AND THE AHMEDABAD MUNICIPAL CORPORATION FOR THE REVITALIZATION OF THE WALLED CITY OF AHMEDABAD

TARIQ MANIAR HOUSE

CHINA MOSAIC FLOORING : Mosaic floorings of all types have been used traditionally in India. China mosaic floorings were a common form of flooring in Ahmedabad, and the city has several examples of such elaborate china mosaic floorings. Traditionally it was old broken and unused china which was chipped in pieces and used in floorings. Today of course this does not exist, instead it has been replaced by conventional glaze tiles been chipped and used in flooring. This particular house had some of the most elaborate china mosaic floorings on the ground floor. This had to be restored. Most of it was damaged but we could salvage small portions which gave us most of the modules for replicating the design. Using the old motifs and with certain modifications ( mainly due to change in usage of space ) , we could restore the flooring in its original charm.

NOTE : As a member of the Ahmedabad Heritage Centre team i have worked on the china mosaic works done, getting the color work done, and designing the kitchen furniture. Shown here is the process of how china mosaics are done today. The credit of the total restoration of the house goes to my collegue and architect Iftikhar Mohiyuddin Maniar.

SUCH CHINA WORKS ARE TIME CONSUMING AND REQUIRE A TEAM OF PERSONS WITH PATIENCE, THIS IS COUNTERED BY THE FACT THAT CEMENT SETS MUCH FASTER THAN WE THINK.
