AHMEDABAD HERITAGE CENTRE : A COLLABORATIVE BETWEEN THE EMBASSY OF FRANCE IN INDIA AND THE AHMEDABAD MUNICIPAL CORPORATION FOR THE REVITALIZATION OF THE WALLED CITY OF AHMEDABAD

EACH MISSING OR DAMAGED ELEMENT IS TO BE CARVED IN WOOD IN ORDER TO BE REPLACED AT THE EXACT POSITION. THIS REQUIRED SKILLED CRAFTSMEN, WHO ARE AVAILABLE IN TODAYS TIMES ALSO.

CARVING THE ELEMENTS DISMANTLING   AFTER DISMANTLING

CAREFUL REMOVAL AND DISMANTLING PLAYS A VITAL ROLE. EACH AND EVERY ORIGINAL ELEMENT SAVED WILL BE REUSED. THE WOOD WHICH CAN BE USED WILL BE FIRST CLEANED, SCRAPED OFF, AND GIVEN LINSEED OIL TERMITE TREATMENT. MODIFICATIONS TO THE OLD WOOD WILL BE DONE IN NEW WOOD OF THE SAME QUALITY. FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT CARE HAS BEEN TAKEN REGARDING MATERIALS. THE WALLS WERE MADE WITH BRICK AND LIME MORTAR INSTEAD OF CONVENTIONAL CEMENT MORTAR. LIME MORTAR HAS BETTER STRENGTH AND IS MORE ADAPTIVE TO WOODEN ELEMENTS.
TAGGING EACH ELEMENT
THIS IS A CRUTIAL ASPECT OF SUCH RESTORATION PROJECTS. THE TAGGING IS DONE WITH SPECIFIC NUMBERING SYSTEM WHICH IS TO BE CO-ORDINATED WITH THE WORKING DRAWINGS. THIS HELPS IN IDENTIFYING THE ELEMENTS WHEN ASSEMBLING THEM. IF SUCH TAGGING IS NOT DONE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT THINGS BACK IN THE SAME MANNER.
STACKING ELEMENTS REASSEMBLING
PROPER STORING OF ELEMENTS IS ESSENTIAL AS IT ENSURES THE FRAGILE ELEMENTS FROM UNWANTED DAMAGE AND LOSS.
